That's amazing. And the stuff you were saying about how people like to draw for fun. Once upon a time I wanted to be an animator for Disney studios. I was around 12-14 years old. That was also the year I first started writing. They used to have matchbooks back then, and on the inside cover was a picture. "Draw Winky." I qualified. The Art Institute of Chicago. But I haven't drawn since then. So...50 years? I was just today thinking maybe I should start drawing again? If I drew a picture a day for a month, just to practice like you were doing, and then one a week, I might be able to do a graphic novel the way I see it.
Of course, all of that's going to have to wait until "after" the bathroom renovations. That's all I need is for her to see me sitting around doing doodles, when I could be sweeping the floor!
Wow the marshmallow sketch is amazing! 3d objects are so daunting to me, but that sketch inspired me to give it another go. Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm!
This is brilliant. You also evidently have a very good understanding of depth, perspective and lighting. Have you done other visual arts in the past, like photography, or sculpture?
Really glad you've pinpointed the joy of drawing for fun, though, as well as Notes' capacity o encourage this sort of thing. I only became a writer 'properly' when I started serialising my work. And putting my sketches up on Notes has had a similar motivating effect.
Part of it is Mike Sowden's thing of being quite up front about not being an expert. The moment you admit to not being an expert, it basically frees you up to do whatever you want, especially in areas you're not yet comfortable.
(I also like the way Elle met Nishant once and immediately became some kind of art prodigy)
Thank you so much, Simon! I have a history in the entertainment industry but only in front of and behind the camera. I’m not a cinematographer but as a director have studied the art of visual storytelling in every department of film. I’m endlessly fascinated with storytelling in every medium! Learning to draw is giving me even more respect and gratitude for the pros creating in this space.
Ah, that fits. :) I think working as a director, even if you're not handling the camera directly, helps give you an appreciation of how to translate the 3D world into 2D.
So, are you going to jump on board the Inktober train? :)
Thank you for the encouragement, Jezz! And it always gives me a mini heart attack whenever the tech I rely on suddenly stops working 😬 Good luck with the new program! 🤞
🙌🙌🙌 killing it!
💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻 Thank you!
👏😍 Well done!
Thank you! I’m excited to try drawing without the instructor using my newfound cylinder skills lol
Laughing at myself has helped me in my own drawing practice nearly every day. You’ll be a pro in no time!

That is fantastic! Thank you for sharing, how cool! Perhaps your wife would approve of you starting now if you drew up some renovation plans 😁
Pretty amazing progress in a short length of time. You were born to it!
Thank you! I’m having so much fun with it! But currently I can only draw cylinders spheres and boxes. lol!
All shapes are comprised of basic shapes, without necesarily getting 3-dimensional. Round off the corners, take an arc out of it.You'd be surprised.
I’m excited to start approaching things from a more structural perspective knowing these basic shapes.

I’m so glad ☺️ I’d love to see what you create!

I am! I’ve been excited to carve out some time to try out these prompts. I’ll probably end up making a lot of cylinders and squares lol
Amazing improvement! Dont give up 😁
